Asthma is a disease in which the lungs are chronically inflamed. The inflammation in asthma is persistent, there are always little sites of inflammation present in the lungs . People with asthma can have difficulty breathing, they can be cramped and cough more often.
The anti-inflammatory effect of CBD is well established. Whether this is also true for asthma has been examined by Dudášová and co-workers . Moreover, the beneficial effects of THC on the respiratory system had already been established. However, the often unwanted psychoactive effects of THC (getting stoned or high) make it less useful for medicinal purposes. In the study of Dudášová and co-workers the lungs of test animals were drawn together by administration of the substance ovalbumin. In test animals who were given CBD in addition to ovalbumin the obstruction of the lungs was reduced.
Allergies are an “excessive” reaction of the immune system . Often people are allergic to substances that are harmless in themselves, such as pollen, animal dander or dust mites. The symptoms of an allergy include a runny nose, watery eyes, itchiness, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest.
In a study of Lieu and co-workers the effect of CBD on a certain type of allergic reactions has been studied . In this study laboratory animals that received CBD seemed to respond less hypersensitive (allergic). CBD does this by suppressing the activity of certain immune cells at the site of inflammation.
There are different types of allergies (I to IV), the study currently discussed shows that CBD is effective in allergies of type IV. If CBD is also effective in other types of allergies must be demonstrated by future research.
Advice for use of cannabinoids against asthma and allergies
The studies that we discussed suggest that CBD may be effective in both asthma and some types of allergies. CBD is a substance that can be used safely, so experimenting is a possibility.
